Brico
Print · Public Work · Self-Initiated · Typography
Brico is a flexible type system created by Split for the People Powered Press. It is used to create large-scale works and murals with community groups, extending the mission of the People Powered Press to amplify voices and spread words worth spreading.
The system was created so that anyone might share in the joy of type design. Using just four shapes, it offers near endless possibilities of letterforms in a different proportions, sizes and styles.

The system is used to create a wide range of giant murals by the People Powered Press, working alongside thousands of community members, and at a scale never before attempted with letterpress printing.
Whilst allowing for the collaboration of participants in making and printing the letterforms, and creating the distinctive look of the PPP’s murals, the system also solves the problem of creating any letter in any proportion at the giant scale the PPP works at without it being prohibitively expensive.

Brico System
Alongside the mural work, Brico is also used by the People Powered Press in workshops where participants can design and print their own letterforms in individual and group sessions as well as in drop in session at events and exhibitions.
