Together

£17.50

Together, a new book from The People Powered Press and design studio Split, documents five years of our award winning Brico mural project. Between 2019 and 2024 The People Powered Press worked with over 120 community groups and 4000+ participants to create a series of community-led murals which amplify the voices of the groups and individuals involved, at a scale never-before attempted using letterpress printing.

All murals were printed on the People Powered Press, which is recognised by the Guinness as the largest letterpress printing press of its kind in the world.

100% of the sales of this book will go to The People Powered Press.

The murals featured throughout Together all use Brico, a system conceived for letterpress printing at this scale by Oli Bentley of design studio Split and founder of the People Powered Press. The system comprises just four shapes, with near endless possibilities of letterforms, weights, sizes and styles. It was created especially for the scale of the People Powered Press and in such a way that anyone might share not only in the joy of writing and print, but of type design also.

In May of this year, Split and the People Powered Press were awarded two prestigious D&AD pencils for Type Design & Lettering, and Environmental Typography.

“As soon as I heard about the People Powered Press I had to see it in person and meet the people behind it. It sounded like a crazy idea. Who in their right mind would embark on such a mind boggling enterprise? When I met Oli it all made sense.

I’m in awe of the People Powered Press. It’s an incredible feat of engineering and ambition, taking the process of letterpress and leading it into a new and exciting territory.”

Participants in the project took part in a series of creative writing workshops, led by the Press’ writer in residence Antony Dunn.

It is from these poems the murals’ words derive. The poetry is published in a range of ways alongside the murals — in zines, as paste ups, on hoardings and as exhibits in their own right.
A small sample of the poetry is included in this book.
