Creative Family Tree launch – Volumes 1 & 2

Journal · 13th January 2014

The research and design were complete, the beer was chilled and we were ready to launch!

The first two volumes of the Leeds Creative Family Tree, Quarry Hill and Mabgate/Sheepscar, were launched last week at Gallery Munro House, amongst a host of Leeds creatives and creative supporters.

Several local vendors and businesses pitched in to make sure the night was a great success. Newcomers The Grub & Grog Shop provided hearty stew and a variety of filled flatbreads, as well as a small but perfectly formed selection of craft beer. Old favourites That Old Chestnut were on hand with vegan cake and tiffins. The space was dressed brilliantly (in a retro archive/research theme) by local set dressers and interior designers We Love This. Costumes for the ‘family portraits’ were provided by our neighbours at WYP Costume Hire. DJ Fuzzy Jones spun funk and soul tunes all evening (with as many ‘family’ themed tunes as she could sneak in). And Matt Andrews of Gallery Munro House kindly took some cracking photographs, shown here.

VIP Kickstarter supporters were given a special edition flat Family Tree to take away, and of course the folded Family Trees were free and available to everyone. Framed copies hung on the walls of the gallery, along with a list of all of our wonderful Kickstarter contributors and supporters. The party was well attended, and it was great to meet lots of lovely Creative Family Tree members and contributors – some for the first time.

We also launched a new companion website the same evening, where you can go to keep up on all of the project’s latest developments.

The project is ongoing, and soon we’ll be working out which area of Leeds we might tackle next… Stay tuned!
